Coffee Shop Field Report

For the field report, I visited InHouse coffee shop outside of Nordstrom. Inside, the serving area was set up as a galley style kitchen, with snack bar attachment. Therefore, customers were able to stand in line while still having space to move around in. They can either start at the snack bar or at the register and then eventually move to the serving bar. Employees are friendly and helpful, while being able to move in a straight line quickly and efficiently. A negative aspect is that there isn't any sitting room inside the shop, one must sit outside in the courtyard. Another is that lines aren't very easy to figure out, as the layout is essentially a giant rectangle. However, the cork ceilings, glass tiles, and warm paint colors create an open and friendly space that makes a person want to settle in.

Project Spotlight

This week as I was going through pictures trying to find a project that inspires me, I remembered Philippe Starck's "Mama Shelter" hotel in Paris. I love this hotel's vibe and aesthetics. The monochromatic color scheme with splashes of color here and there is really cool. I also love the unique bed side lamps.

Improvement on Design

Although this design is good in essence, I think it could be improved upon:

For starters, the overall color scheme is too dark. Although they tried to lighten the space up by leaving the ceilings and ballisters white, the overall effect is still gloomy. I also think it could use touches of warm colors such as orange or red.On the whole it's a good design, it just needs some pick me ups here and there.

Cool Kitchens

In browsing for interesting pictures, I ran across loads of funky, fun kitchens. I thought these were all aesthetically appealing.

This week, I've been inspired by Florence + The Machine. For those who don't know who that is, it's a band consisting of Florence Welch and an ever changing backing band. Their first album is called "Lungs" and I've been listening to it all week. The songs are full of emotional depth and they remind me of open, bright spaces. Here's some pictures of the areas the music reminds me of and the album art.

Possible Career

Several careers are possible with interior design. The one I'm most interested in, though, is green or sustainable design.
Sustainable design is creating spaces that are healthy and eco-friendly while still remaining stylish.Green designers make any where from $32,000 to $64,000 depending on their skill level.Since I have so many allergies and am prone to get sick easily, this is a career I'm highly interested in. I'd love to be able to help people like myself live a in a healthier environment.
